Shooting in the Autumn is arguably the best time to dust off your camera and head out into the open. The fall offers photographers so much scope and with so many interesting colors, its hard to know exactly where to start.

Below you’ll find a list of tips and photographic examples to help get your photographic creative juices flowing, so that soon you’ll be exhibiting a portfolio that’s full to the brim with Autumn colors!

Shoot in Dusk or Dawn

If you can find the post summer time energy to get out of bed just before sunrise, you’ll soon realise that it was worth it.

fall2

Early morning mist combined with clear air, offers photographers access to some excellent shots, but remember to shoot a few clicks up so that you get that bright satisfying early morning glow!

Also, try shooting just before sunset when the light is golden, accentuating the red and gold colors.

Embrace Overcast Days

Just because the skies are grey, don’t put your camera away! Overcast days have softer shadow so try capturing images under the tree canopy.

Capture Contrasting Colors

Autumn is all about color. One way to accentuate colors is to try framing your shots so that colors contrast with one another. Golden leaves against a blue sky, a red leaf on lush green grass.

White Balance

Auto mode may not give you the most vibrant results.

fall3

Warm up your colours by increasing the color temperature (not too much) or try selecting a ‘cloudy’ or ‘shade’ setting.

Avoid the Temptation of HDR

HDR photography is for photographers that want to avoid thinking about colors or the light as the technique simply does everything for you, and if you’re just starting out in photography, sure your images will look nice, but you wont learn about light and you wont learn about color which are of the most important aspects of photography.

Below I have listed some of the best places to get those colorful shots, so that you don’t loose any of that creative flow:
