There’s nothing worse than cheesy smiles and awkward poses when it comes to kid’s photos – so if you want to get cheese-free photos then you may want to consider the following tips:

Fun Locations

The location you choose can have an effect on how open your kids are to having their photo taken. Stuffy living rooms will give you stuffy photos, while a fun and open location will result in fun, happy faces. Head to the park, the beach, the zoo, even just an open field and let them have a fun time for better candid images.

Comfortable Clothes

Remember those itchy suits and dresses you had to wear for family photos? Did they make you want to smile for the camera? Make sure your kids have comfortable clothes – even involve them in the selection process for further cooperation. A costume or two never hurt either for that inner cowboy or ballerina just waiting to express him or herself.

A Long Lens

If the cheesy smile comes out the moment your child sees the camera, then a telephoto lens may be the solution. Catch them in the sandbox, playing soccer, or interacting with their friends and siblings. With the right lens you can get a clear shot of your kids’ faces when they’re really enjoying themselves, without having to coerce a natural expression they don’t want to make.

Props Can Help

When it’s just you, your kids, and your camera it can be hard for kids to “let go” and be themselves. Having a few props can help them forget about the camera and help bring out their amazing personalities. Balls, buckets, musical instruments, dolls, anything that captures their interest can help you get awesome candid shots, as well as helping you create a fun and original image.

Keep your Camera Handy

You never know when an opportunity will come up for some great candid kids’ photos. Maybe your kids find a frog at the park, or a spontaneous water fight breaks out while washing the car. You never know when something will happen so be prepared. Even if it’s just your mobile phone it’s good to have a camera on hand to capture those fleeting moments.

Final Tips

Keep photo sessions short, kids have limited patience (and so do you). Engage your kids by asking questions, getting them to tell you a story, or have them pretend to be something. Know when to walk away and try another day.
